The Pivot Step

The Pivot step involves a change in your center of gravity. In the stepping drill, you practice the pivot step via the following transitions:

  • A right N stance (facing “north”) pivots to a left N stance (facing “west”)
  • A left N stance (facing “north”) pivots to a right N stance (facing “east”)
  • A right L stance (facing “north”) pivots to left N stance (facing “north”)
  • A left L stance (facing “north”) pivots to a right N stance (facing “north”)

(Here, the compass directions are relative to your starting point, not magnetic north!)

Even though there is no change in the gross placement of the feet, it still followings the definition of step, which is the transition from one stance to another.
