Ashtanga Yoga is the “grandfather” of power yoga and vinyasa yoga. Developed by Pattabhi Jois in the mid-twentieth century. The term “Ashtanga” means Eight Limbs, referring to the Eight limbs of yoga described by Patanjali. The Ashtanga Primary series is a set fixed set of postures and transitions. It is a rigorous practice and is unheated, involving a number of poses as well as movements that create an “inner heat”. The primary series is also referred to as “yoga chikitsa”, or healing yoga, for cleansing the body, mind, and senses through movement and breath.
